Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) an Effective Hair Loss Treatment?
The following response was posted to our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums by “HairCenter”, online representative for Dr. Jerry Cooley of Charlotte, NC who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians.
I have been reading more about platelet rich plasma (PRP) but I am still not entirely sure what it is and/or how it works. I am in my early 30s and would like to put off hair transplant surgery as long as I possibly can
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
PRP is a very misused and misrepresented hair loss treatment and your concerns about the number of procedures and how it is marketed is becoming a concern for Dr. Cooley. This is why we’ve started a series of posts to show the reality of PRP as it relates to multiple cases we are in the process of presenting.
We’ve started a series of posts on the forums titled “Not All PRP Is the Same” and we’re showing that some cases can have a great result with dramatic improvements while others are moderate at best. PRP with ACell properly administered, can and does have the same effect as Propecia (finasteride) and the same range of responses is also seen.
Some respond great, some do not but one of the big issues that Dr. Cooley sees is the idea that one needs to have three or four treatments in a year. Dr. Cooley strongly believes that one procedure is usually enough and we’ll be presenting cases that represent why he feels this way.
