Hairline Density After Hair Transplant Surgery?
This question comes from a member of our [tag]Hair Restoration[/tag] Discussion Forums and Social Community:
I’m undergoing [tag]hair transplant surgery[/tag] to re-establish a nonexistent [tag]hairline[/tag]. What type of density can I expect in my hairline after the [tag]hair restoration procedure[/tag]?
Although most [tag]hair loss[/tag] patients would like a very dense, fully restored hairline, experts agree that the goal of [tag]hair transplantation[/tag] is creating the illusion of density. Now, this statement does not imply that modern [tag]hair transplant[/tag]s are unnatural, sparse, or aesthetically insignificant; simply that restoring a hairline to a juvenile level or to the density of the unaffected donor region is unrealistic and disregards progressive [tag]balding[/tag]. However, through appropriate planning and refined skills, expert [tag]hair transplant surgeon[/tag]s are able to create the appearance of full hairline density.
Regardless, post-operative hairline density is an important factor, and achieving a satisfactory result depends on various physiological elements. Factors like hair characteristics (coarse versus fine; straight versus wavy), pre-hair loss density, hair and scalp coloring, level of thinning (if [tag]follicular units[/tag] are only transplanted to the [tag]frontal hairline[/tag] the density can be greater), and donor region availability affect the number of grafts implanted and the post-operative density.
For example, after this community member revealed he has semi-fine, brown, slightly wavy hair characteristics and wanted the frontal third of his scalp restored, Coalition surgeon Dr. Glenn M. Charles said the following:
Although it’s nearly impossible to determine what percentage of the patient’s original density would be necessary to give the illusion of full density, patients with your hair characteristics usually require a density of 40 – 60 [tag]follicular unit grafts[/tag] per square centimeter of [tag]balding scalp[/tag]. This level should create the appearance of full density.
