Should Lateral or Sagittal (Vertical) Slits Be Made In The Scalp During Hair Transplantation?

In a recent [tag]hair restoration[/tag] discussion thread, the question of using [tag]lateral[/tag] versus [tag]sagittal[/tag] (vertical) slit technique in [tag]hair transplant[/tag] surgery was discussed. Slits simply refer to the incisions made in the [tag]balding[/tag] scalp by the [tag]hair transplant surgeon[/tag]. These sites are the future recipients of the transplanted [tag]follicular unit grafts[/tag], and can be made in two opposing directions: lateral (running horizontally, or from “ear-to-ear”) or sagittal (running vertically). Although both methods are technically acceptable, [tag]hair restoration physicians[/tag] utilize different incision styles and many actually use a combination of both types in different parts of the scalp.

Recommended hair transplant surgeon Dr. Parsa Mohebi, for example, states he uses [tag]saggital incisions[/tag] in the hairline and only implants [tag]singular follicular unit grafts[/tag] into these recipient sites. Dr. Mohebi explains that these types of incisions minimize trauma to small dermal blood vessels in the front of the scalp; he utilizes [tag]lateral incisions[/tag] in the remainder of the scalp to increase the appearance of density. Many other hair restoration physicians utilize a similar model and agree that saggital incisions are useful in the hairline, but lateral incisions should be used throughout the rest of the [tag]transplanted scalp[/tag]. Other surgeons utilize lateral incisions over the entirety of the [tag]balding scalp[/tag] and believe it creates greater density.
