Is it possible for someone who has extensive [tag]hair loss[/tag] (a 7 on the Nordwood hair loss scale) to be successful in a [tag]hair transplant[/tag]? I seem to have quite a bit of donor hair. I am not looking for the hair of a 20 year old but something that would look decent for a 58 year old man. I don’t mind looking my age.

The key to being satisfied with current day [tag]hair restoration surgery[/tag] is to have realistic expectations and select a top notch [tag]hair transplant physician[/tag]. As you know, with extensive hair loss, [tag]hair transplantation[/tag] can’t restore a full head of hair since it only can only relocate a limited amount of bald resistant hair follicles from your donor area to the top of your head. But often even men with extensive hair loss can restore a mature hairline that will often change the look of their face. But typically men with extensive [tag]hairloss[/tag] will not have enough donor hair to restore the crown/back of the head area.

To see before and after photos of a few dozen extensively bald men who have had successfully benefited from [tag]hair restoration[/tag] surgery, visit our hair transplant gallery show casing those who had extensive hair loss.

To find a top notch prescreened [tag]hair transplant surgeon[/tag] visit the Hair Transplant Network. I also suggest that you visit or active Hair Restoration Discussion Forum and use the “Find” feature to search for posts about any physician you are considering.

  • Jay,

You can have your hair at any length, however, in order to conceal the scar after surgery, you want to keep your hair at the minimum 1/2 inch...preferably longer.

Those with extensive losl can still benefit from a hair transplant. (See the link to my blog below), however, developing reasonal expectations and discussing them with your doctor is vital to ensure your satisfaction.

    I hope this helps.

  • Do I need to have my hair a certain length to harvest for transplant and can I be given any reasonable estimate of success beforehand?
