I’ve been on Rogaine since January of 2004.   Within 4 months the frontal pattern [tag]baldness[/tag] stopped and I couldn’t see my scalp anymore.   But last summer I noticed scalp appearing on the temple regions so I went on [tag]Proscar[/tag] in 2007.   I’m still using the [tag]Rogaine 5%[/tag] but no hair is coming back.   Will a Proscar (or Propecia) and Rogaine combination help regrow hair in the temple region?

[tag]Propecia[/tag] ([tag]finasteride[/tag])  and [tag]Rogaine[/tag] ([tag]minoxidil[/tag])  are FDA approved and proven for a [tag]balding[/tag] crown but many [tag]hair loss[/tag] sufferers also swear by their efficacy in the hairline and temple areas.   Everyone responds differently to these medications. Though they might restore a good amount of hair in some, others may experience lesser [tag]hair growth[/tag], or maybe none at all. Typically, these [tag]hair loss treatment[/tag] solutions, especially when combined are pretty good at stopping the progression of [tag]male pattern baldness[/tag], but only a select few have significant [tag]hair regrowth[/tag].

The unknown factor here is – where would your hair loss  be without them? Though Propecia  and Rogaine may not be regrowing all your lost hair, your [tag]allopecia[/tag] could be much worse without these medications. Of course, there is also a possibility that your hair would be in the same condition if you weren’t using them, hence, the unknown factor.

In my opinion, unless you are experiencing side effects, you may want to consider continued use as they will give you the best chance of preventing future balding.

  • Shiam,

Unfortunately, though Propecia and Rogaine are proven hair loss treatments, they're only technically proven for the crown. That doesn't mean that they won't help stop the progression of pattern baldness from the front however, only hair transplant surgery is proven to grow hair in completely bald areas.

Because hair loss is progressive and you've started losing hair at such an early age, you may want to consider staying on Rogaine and adding Propecia to your regime. Even if they don't regrow hair, they may just help slow down or stop future hair loss.

    All the Best,
