Planning a Hair Transplant: More Coverage or Greater Density?

This question, from a member of our [tag]hair loss[/tag] social community and discussion forums, was answered by Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. Glenn Charles:

What if a person completely [tag]bald[/tag] on top got 2000 grafts spread across the front 2/3? How do you think that would look if the person kept the sides and back neatly trimmed and short?

I know it would be thin but how thin I wonder. I’m debating if I want the [tag]hair transplant[/tag] surgeon to use the 2000 and just restore the front third or to take a chance and just spread it out on top and just rock a short beard and short hair on the sides while the transplant hair grows out a little longer.

The answer depends on the size of the scalp (bald area) and hair characteristics. Two [tag]hair restoration[/tag] patients who both receive 2000 grafts to the same sized area of bald scalp can have very different results.

It is generally recommended to pack the grafts into smaller areas to achieve better density and then do other areas if more donor hair is available.
