Obtaining Excellent Hair Transplant Results with Minimal Scarring

Below, Coalition member [tag]Dr. William Lindsey[/tag] discusses how the [tag]trichophytic closure[/tag] technique can significantly minimize the appearance of scarring and make it virtually undetectable.

The trichophytic closure is a technique used by many hair restoration surgeons to close the donor wound after removing the hair for transplanting. The primary benefit of this technique is that hair will grow through the scar after only a few months post-op. By beveling the cut, the hair roots are preserved to grow out and in front of the scar, camouflaging it. Below are two examples of patients who had undergone brow procedures with and without the trichophytic closure.

Last week, Dr. Lindsey was visited by a female patient who previously had a brow lift performed without the trichophytic closure. As a result, the scar was fairly wide and has no hair growth through it. Due to the evident scarring, she inquired about [tag]follicular unit extraction[/tag] ([tag]FUE[/tag]) repair, a technique often used to camouflage scarring when the trichophytic closure technique hasn’t been used.

On the other hand, Dr. Lindsey recently saw a patient he did a brow lift on 3.5 months ago using the trichophytic closure technique for a follow-up. While not all of her hair is growing yet, her scar looks quite good and is nearly undetectable from a foot away. This will continue to improve in the next several months. She is a perfect example of why the trichophytic closure was developed.

The trichophytic closure technique is now considered the “gold standard” donor closure technique by the vast majority of leading hair transplant surgeons. While the trichophytic closure technique isn’t perfect and provides no guarantees, this advanced technique provides nearly undetectable scarring for the majority of patients.
