This hair loss question was answered by Dr. Robert True of New York, NY who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. His professional answer is below.
I just recently had a [tag]hair transplant[/tag] and it’s finally starting to grow. I noticed that some hair is growing rather fast while others haven’t popped through yet. I know this is normal, but my hair is starting to look straggly. Is it safe to cut the new [tag]transplanted hair[/tag]?
However, some patients find that keeping their hair short all over their head as the new [tag]hair grows[/tag] in makes the process even less evident. It is ok to cut the newly [tag]growing hair[/tag] without fear of any damage. The hair can be cut as short as a number one clipper setting if desired.

gnago,
Yes, but I recommend waiting at least 7 to 10 days before wearing a tight fitting hat, helmet or any other kind of head covering that may press down or harm the fragile follicular units during the critical healing phase. Your newly transplanted hair will be fully secure in 5 to 7 days and thus, wearing a bike helmet shouldn't be a problem after this point.
Note that all hair restoration physicians have their own set of postoperative instructions and thus, it's always best to follow them. When in doubt, ask your hair transplant surgeon their opinion on the topic.
