This question comes from a member of our [tag]hair loss[/tag] social community and discussion forums:
Recently, I began worrying about losing my hair. Because of this, I’ve started checking my pillow, hair brush, and shower floor for any signs of increased hair loss. Since I don’t want to worry excessively, I’m curious: how many hairs does an individual not suffering from [tag]genetic hair loss[/tag] lose per day?
While opinions differ slightly, most [tag]hair restoration[/tag] experts believe losing anywhere from 50 to 150 hairs per day is normal and not indicative of hair loss. While a portion of these hairs are lost while grooming and showering, another significant portion of normal loss comes from hairs in the catagen (“regression”) phase of the natural [tag]hair follicle[/tag] cycle.
However, if you are concerned about hair loss, I highly recommend seeking the opinion of a talented [tag]hair transplant[/tag] physician early and considering intervention with preventive therapies like [tag]Rogaine[/tag] ([tag]minoxidil[/tag]) and [tag]Propecia[/tag] ([tag]finasteride[/tag]).

Balding,
In theory, all medications have side effects. While it definitely breaks down to specific patient's physiology, both of these drugs are associated with side effects. To read minoxidil's (Rogaine) side effects, following this link: http://www.drugs.com/sfx/rogaine-side-effects.html; for finasteride's (Propecia) side effects, click here: http://www.drugs.com/sfx/propecia-side-effects.html
Regardless, many hair loss sufferers seem to agree that the benefits of both minoxidil and finasteride outweigh the potential side effects.
Hope this helps!
