Can Masturbation Lead to Hair Loss
Can excessive masturbation lead to hair loss in men?
There is no scientific evidence that suggests that masturbation causes hair loss. This myth got started because some people believe that masturbation releases hormones in the body that cause androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss). In fact, there have been several studies that show that masturbation or sexual activity have no measurable effect on hormone production in the human body.
So What Causes Hair Loss?
The most common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss), the main cause for androgenic alopecia is the inherited “balding” gene. Specifically, baldness is a result of certain hormones interacting over time with hair follicles that are susceptible to the effects of the hormones. Hair follicles, as well sebaceous glands contain high levels of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This 5-alpha reductase enzyme converts testosterone in to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) through the blood stream. DHT is the main hormone responsible for causing hair loss in both men and women.
While the hair loss industry is a billion dollar industry, there are only a few proven treatments that can slow, stop or even reverse the progression hair loss in men and women. Currently, there are two FDA approved medications that treat genetic hair loss, the first treatment that was approved by the FDA was a topical solution called Rogaine (minoxidil). The second treatment to be approved by the FDA was a pill called Propecia (finasteride), this medication requires a prescription by a physician, while Rogaine (minoxidil) can be purchased over the counter. Both of these medications have been clinically proven to treat genetic hair loss with good to moderate success.
However, the only way to truly regrow hair on a completely bald scalp is through hair restoration surgery. Hair transplant surgery is a standalone treatment that does not require any pills or topical ointments for the transplanted hair to grow. However, the success of the procedure relies heavily on the skill, talent and experience of the hair transplant surgeon. Therefore, it is imperative that a prospective patient researches the surgeon and clinic thoroughly to ensure the physician/clinic have a long track record of producing excellent patient results.
