I’ve seen your informative website the Hair Transplant Network  and I’m currently deciding who to go with. But I don’t see Bosley as a recommended physician or clinic. They claim to be the best in their TV ads.

I live in Florida (Miami) and want to know if you recommend their
clinic in Miami or Boca Raton.

Like many hair loss sufferers, I first got interested in hair transplantation after seeing a Bosley TV infomercial. When I saw my first Bosley infomercial over ten years ago I thought I had just found the Moses who was going to deliver me from the slavery of hair loss. His infomercials, tapes and brochures became my ten commandments. I virtually slept with his video under my pillow.

But in time I came to realize that outstanding promotions do not equal outstanding hair transplants. What I did learn is that the best value (quality and price) is not to be found at the heavily advertised national chain clinics. Rather the best values are the gem in the rough hair transplant clinics that do virtually no advertising and get patients from good word of mouth on and offline. Unlike the national chain clinics, these quality independents often do just one patient a day and focus on quality rather than quantity.

These high quality independent hair transplant clinics with proven track records are the clinics presented on  the Hair Transplant Network and the Hair Loss Learning Center. These independents are also  often praised on our discussion forum. I recommend that any person considering a clinic first use the “Find” feature on our hair restoration discussion forum to search our forum database for any info about the doctor or clinic they are considering – including Bosley. They will then find any good or bad experiences posted by actual patients. Generally the patient reviews from the national chains like Bosley have not been favorable.

To learn about independent hair restoration physicians in South Florida who have proven quality track records visit our recommended physicians in Florida.

Since getting involved with hair restoration as the publisher of the Hair Transplant Network, I’ve met Dr. Lee Bosley on several occasions at various hair transplant meetings. In person he is Marcus Welby, Moses and your kindest grandfather rolled into one – just like he is on TV. So I found it very interesting to read Dr. Bosley confiding to the New Yorker in the January 9th, 2006 issue that “I have my regrets, in retrospect. I got to the point where I felt pretty guilty doing it.”

Apparently since selling the Bosley Medical Group four years ago to Japanese wig maker called Aderans for $40,000,000, he now feels comfortable in recounting how horrible hair transplantation was in the early days. Some how his candid comments reminded me of Robert McNamara’s recent confessional interviews in which he apologized for his part in orchestrating the Vietnam War. Strange what old age will do to a man.

In this New Yorker article Dr. Bosley described his early work in the 1960’s by saying “If it grew at all, it was in different directions – clumpy, bedraggled, three hairs of out of a plug . . . if there was any hair growing at all it was a success – it was – look it’s growing! – and it looked like crap.”

So how did a company who by its founder’s own admission provided results that “looked like crap” become the largest hair transplantation company with ninety two offices? The answer is lots and lots of TV.

According to the article Dr. Bosley worked his way through medical school in Omaha by “selling pots and pans door to door”. So apparently he learned a thing or two about sales.

With the power of TV, even sub pare results would not stand in the way of success. After all, this was in the days before the interactive Internet in which hair loss sufferers like you could talk back. With TV – perception could over come reality and still largely does.

Dr. Emanuel Marritt, a famous hair transplant surgeon who is now retired, explained it in the following way – “You have a population of patients who are emotionally extremely vulnerable, willing to pay anything. And you have a doctor with a mountain of advertising debt who needs to break even. It’s a conspiracy of two: a patient who doesn’t want to hear what he really needs, being operated on by a doctor who doesn’t want to tell him.”

The article states that today the Bosley Medical Group is “both the world’s most successful transplant company and among the most maligned.” The article points to Bosley Medical Group’s many lawsuits. For more detailed information visit the Bosley Medical Violations Site.

Apparently Dr. Lee Bosley who in the article is described as the “self-anointed Renoir of transplantation” is still plugging away (so to speak) in the back office for a fee that is twice the regular Bosley price. Despite selling the Bosley Medical Group he retains an office and with over 38,000 hair transplant procedures to his credit, he is ready to take on number thirty eight thousand and one.

His TV fans will no doubt sleep better knowing that some lucky morning they may begin their day as his patient.

So my suggestion is to look past the infomercials and sleep tight and don’t let the late night hair infomercials bite.

  • The good comments on this website are fake and posted by employees of Bosley. I was a patient and suffered many problems in which the District Attorney fought and won. If you are considering getting a Bosley procedure, DO NOT. I AM WARNING YOU! STAY AWAY FROM BOSLEY!!!!

  • I had my H/T-FUT done in Aug-2015. I am in my late 40's and I was not happy with my hair big time. I stay in shape and I have a young face. Personally some guys look good bald, I wouldn't look good period. The hardest thing for me was the phone call. I actually hated looking in the mirror.. What the heck is happening to my looks and hair :(??? I made an apt. with the NYC office. Met with Ken B. I did some homework on h/t's and doctors blah-blah.. Bosely was running a special/rebate. After consulting with Ken I took the leap of faith. Ken wasn't pushy or abrasive. He answered my questions etc..etc. He said I was a norwood class 5+- Not good and I think I was in denial how bad it was. I met with Dr. D Alpeter. I liked his demeanor and character immediately. Had the H/T done the following week. I needed over 2200 grafts and some. Cost $10,100. Surgery went well-great staff. Dr. A made me comfortable at all times during the surgery. A true professional in my book. Surgery in morning, finishing 3-30pm. For me, the first month 1/2 was a little painful and discomfort. On FIN and 5% Rogaine at night. Have some shedding here and there, But after 2 months I see new hairs and my old hair is coming back:)))). I AM VERY PLEASED FOR NOW. I suggest do not use hair cover ups topics. I've tried the powder version and dermmatch. YOU WILL LOOSE MORE HAIR USING THIS PRODUCTS IN TIME. Ask me how do I know. :(((( Let me repeat what I said earlier, I am currently happy with my early/results with Bosely. I actually like looking in the mirror now:))). GL

  • There is no working solution of hair loss except hair transplant that costs too much. Only Minoxidil is FDA aproved drug that helps a little. Just got to know it at minoxidil15express.com that helped me a lot to know about the drug.

  • I visited the office of Bosley in Austin Tx. I informed them of a medical procedure i had on my head that was not hair related. Consultant did not inquire or research the procedure and told me i was a good candidate for the surgery and we scheduled an operation date. 2 weeks went by and i was really excited at the possibility of getting my hair back. I get to Houston for the procedure, check in to a hotel, miss 2 days of work, only to have the doctor inform me he couldnt perform the procedure due to my other operation. A lot of time , hope and lost money could have been saved if Casey Miller at the Austin Tx Bosley consultation center had just called the doctor in Houston and dove a little deeper into my previous surgery or mabye used google or asked me more details. My point is, a lot of hassle could have been avoided if people had done their job. Some would get fired in other fields for making a mistake that cost someone that amount of trouble. I have nothing negative to say about Bosley. I do however have plenty of negative things to say about their consultant Casey Miller at the Austin Tx facility.

  • Only two weeks ago I had a follicular transplantation surgery performed by Dr. Angela Phipps of Bosley in Raleigh, NC. I felt comfortable with her, and am following carefully her instructions for post-operative care and healing. All is going well in these first two weeks, and it does not seem I will have any scarring at all in the donor area. Surprisingly good results for now.I am hopeful that Dr. Phipps' 8th month review will reveal great results.

  • Hello. I had my first procedure done at the Bosley SF office in 2006 and was very pleased with the results. I recently had a second procedure done at the same office with the same physician. Dr. Terrence Aragoni was both professional and kind. I had great experiences with them both times and would highly recommend them. The staff was friendly at all times and the procedure itself was not a big deal. The worst part about it was the administering of the local anesthetics. Other than that I couldn't feel a thing.

  • Hi,
I do not know Bosely and I had some good feedback about them. However, I know very well ALI AFSHARPOUR working at Bosely. I just can tell you to avoid him.
My experience with Afsharpour was a DISASTER.
As I know he is not from any MEDCIAL or Para-medical education. Just be careful with Ali Afsharpour. I can not mention here what I know about that person due to "personal reasons" but JUST AVOID ALI AFSHARPOUR.

  • I was just thinking about the tranplant but it costs a lot and surgical methods are so scary for me and was just searching over the internet and found a product Minoxidil. I tried it as I tried so many products but found it really so useful. In just 4-5 days I saw that new hair were growing in the bald area and finally in just 6 months my head was full of hair. I advise everyone to try it once before other treatments at the above mentioned site as they are so helpful and will give a better advise as the type of your problem.

  • Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves individual hair follicles from a part of the body called the 'donor site' to bald or balding part of the body known as the 'recipient site'. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair.

  • This is my first time on this site, I'm seriously considering Bosley, but since I'm a college student, I'm hesitating on even making the call because I'm still paying for tuition, books, etc. and that's pricey as it is. Looking at the cost of Bosley kind of freaks me out. $10,000 is not doable for this poor college student. How do payment plans work? I'm considering doing this in Salt Lake City, Utah. It really is a huge insecurity I have. Everyday I look in the mirror and become a little more depressed. It seems like every time I wash my hair a bigger portion of my scalp is showing. I've been masking the hair loss with a spray (like those halloween sprays) to keep it from looking so bald, it's been working in masking it but it's causing everything in my bathroom to have a film of spray. I think it may also be contributing to the speed at which my hair is being lost. I tried another product that masks the loss (a powder), it worked well too, but it was a little expensive to purchase as much as I was, for as little as the bottle contained, that's why I went to the spray which is like $2 a bottle. It smells terrible and I hate using it, but paying $2 per can is more appealing than $10,000. So if there's anyone that's been to the Salt Lake City center, could you tell me your results/experience and if you're happy or not? Also how long do the restorations last and is the cost the same every time? I'm a little nervous about the scaring and all that.
