I am going to consult with Dr. Epstein in Miami, FL in the next few weeks.  I am not currently on Propecia but I plan on getting on it soon.  How long should I be taking Propecia before my hair transplant?

Thank you for your inquiry,

Dr. Epstein is a first-rate hair transplant surgeon and is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Surgeons who represent an elite group of hair transplant physicians dedicated to excellence and providing state of the art hair transplantation results to their hair transplant patients.  These hair restoration physicians must meet our high level of membership standards to join and maintain their membership.  You will be in excellent hands if you choose to undergo hair transplantation with Dr. Epstein.

The answer to your question depends on whether or not transplanted hair is being placed in between and around your natural hair.  If not, then you do not have to be on Propecia for any length of time before undergoing hair restoration surgery.  However, if your hair transplant doctor is transplanting hair in between and around existing native hair, it is recommended to be on Propecia (finasteride) for at least 6 months but preferably one whole year.  Propecia may help strengthen any minaturizing hairs being impacted by Dihydrotestosterone or DHT (the hormone responsible for hereditary hair loss).

I hope this helps.
