Can a man with extensive hair loss benefit from Hair Transplantation?
Category: Donor Issues , Hair Density , Hair Restoration Physicians , Session SizesIs it possible for someone who has extensive hair loss (a 7 on the Nordwood hair loss scale) to be successful in a hair transplant? I seem to have quite a bit of donor hair. I am not looking for the hair of a 20 year old but something that would look decent for a 58 year old man. I don’t mind looking my age.
The key to being satisfied with current day hair restoration surgery is to have realistic expectations and select a top notch hair transplant physician. As you know, with extensive hair loss, hair transplantation can’t restore a full head of hair since it only can only relocate a limited amount of bald resistant hair follicles from your donor area to the top of your head. But often even men with extensive hair loss can restore a mature hairline that will often change the look of their face. But typically men with extensive hairloss will not have enough donor hair to restore the crown/back of the head area.

Do I need to have my hair a certain length to harvest for transplant and can I be given any reasonable estimate of success beforehand?

Jay,
You can have your hair at any length, however, in order to conceal the scar after surgery, you want to keep your hair at the minimum 1/2 inch…preferably longer.
Those with extensive losl can still benefit from a hair transplant. (See the link to my blog below), however, developing reasonal expectations and discussing them with your doctor is vital to ensure your satisfaction.
