Selecting a Hair Restoration Clinic

As a hair loss sufferer visiting this hair restoration blog I’d like to inform you that Dr. Alvi Armani has filed a lawsuit against the Hair Transplant Network community for comments made on our forum that were critical of him and his clinic.

Yet another hair transplant surgeon does not feel that me or certain other members of this hair restoration community have the right to express our opinions or share our experiences.

I invite you to exercise your right to free expression by visiting our forum topic, Dr. Armani Lawsuit Against the Hair Transplant Network, and reply to demonstrate that you are prepared to exercise your right to free speech.

Fortunately our forefathers had the good sense to make the first amendment protecting free speech the very first amendment. Many people, including me, have expressed numerous reservations online about Dr. Armani and his questionable ethics, deceptive marketing practices, as well as issues with his hair transplant technique.

Two posters, one of whom claimed to be a patient of Dr. Armani, were banned on Hair Loss Help when they expressed reservations about Dr. Armani, his practice and his results. They then came to this forum and exercised their right to share their experiences and concerns. One of Dr. Armani’s online representatives then contacted us. We encouraged them to exercise their right to reply and refute any claims that they felt were not accurate. However, instead of replying they chose to sue the Hair Transplant Network.

Exploring hair loss treatment options is a high priority for balding men and women who desperately want to stimulate hair regrowth. Despite the fancy hype of marketing claims, there is still no miracle hair loss cure and in most cases, treatment options are limited. Hair loss drugs such as Propecia (finasteride) for men only and Rogaine (minoxidil) are often insufficient in their effect and typically work better for those with minimal hair loss. But men and women with excessive baldness often become frustrated when these treatments offer little to no benefit. Are hair pieces and alopecia wigs the only answer?

Deciding to undergo hair transplant surgery should not be taken lightly and considered carefully. Hair replacement can be great if you find the right hair restoration physician who will work with you to develop long term goals and has a proven track record of producing quality and consistent patient results. Below you will find 3 important considerations to help you determine whether or not hair transplant surgery is for you.

Am I a Candidate for Hair Transplant Surgery? Not all bald or balding men and women are hair transplant candidates. Consulting with a qualified hair transplant surgeon will help you determine whether or not you are a qualified candidate. Read this article for tips on determining whether or not you are a good candidate for hair replacement surgery.

“Who is the best hair transplant surgeon” is a question commonly asked on our online community hair restoration forum. Because selecting a quality hair restoration physician is vital to ensure a successful result, this question demands an answer.

But determining “who is best” is often very subjective and is not necessarily the right question. Instead, a better question would be, “What are the characteristics of an elite hair transplant surgeon?”

In simple terms, an elite hair restoration surgeon is one who continually adapts and refines their techniques to meet a patient’s hair restoration goals. An elite hair transplant doctor will also stand by their work and help their patients through any potential problems. Continuing education, regular consulting with other leading hair replacement surgeons, and a dedication to patient excellence are key ingredients to making an elite hair transplant surgeon.

Our patient based online hair transplant community carefully selects only the best of surgeons to recommend on the Hair Transplant Network. With today’s improvements in hair transplant techniques, dedicated surgeons with experienced staff can perform large dense packed sessions of ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation in a single session when appropriate for the patient. Creating smaller incisions with ultra refined tools allows a surgeon to densely pack follicular unit grafts close together, almost twice as much as standard follicular unit hair transplantation, while minimizing scalp trauma. An elite group of surgeons who perform these ultra refined hair transplant sessions are eligible for members hip in the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. See our high level of membership standards for the Coalition by clicking here.

Having been involved as a patient member of the Hair Transplant Network community for 3 1/2 years, I’ve read a multitude of hair transplant experiences and seen a magnitude of hair transplant photos.  Though many (including myself) will rave about how far hair transplantation has come for balding men and women, hair transplant failure cases are very disheartening.  But why would a hair transplant fail?  Aren’t they guaranteed?

Seeing sub-par hair restoration results or failure cases is what drives me daily to help hair loss patients find hair transplant surgeons that consistently perform state of the art hair replacement surgery.  I can’t emphasize enough just how important is physician selection.

Ironically, “experience” doesn’t necessarily mean that a physician is using state of the art hair replacement techniques.  Unfortunately, many continue to use minigrafting or even old hair plugs, creating an unnatural look.  Some hair surgeons continue to use multi-blade (3 blades or more) knives to remove the donor hair causing hair transection and inevitably reducing the amount of “usable” donor hair.

As a patient myself, I can’t emphasize enough: do your research!  Speak with, meet with, and view patient hair transplant photos online.  Educate yourself on all the up-to-date hair transplant techniques and KNOW the difference between a high quality and low quality hair replacement surgery.  Only then should you select a hair restoration physician that will help you best treat your hair loss.

For an example of a hair transplant failure case, see Dr. Rassman’s Balding Blog Article on this issue by clicking here.

This question was posed by a female hair loss sufferer seeking hair loss help on our hair restoration forum and answered by Dr. Michael Beehner of Saratoga Springs, NY who is one of our recommended hair restoration physicians. His professional answer is below.

The total number of hair grafts planted in a hair transplant procedure simply refers to the number of “building blocks” used in that case, whatever their size or composition. In modern hair transplantation, that usually can range from a 1-hair follicular unit graft up to usually a double follicular unit graft of 4-5 hairs, both dissected under microscopes. Ordinarily the number of grafts equals the number of recipient site incisions with two exceptions.

One, if extremely tiny incisions are made over the entire planting area and the physician feels that 3 or 4-hair follicular units are too large to use and instructs the assistants to split them into two smaller hair grafts each. Actually, two 2-hair grafts made by splitting a 4-hair follicular units will still count as two grafts, because the work was taken to cut them into separate units and two separate incision sites are made to place them in.

Two, if a patient has a larger percentage of naturally occurring 1-hair follicular unit grafts in the donor tissue, often two 1-hair follicular units will be “paired up” and placed into a single incision, which then becomes a 2-hair site, as opposed to making two separate sites and placing 1 hair into each one.

When you hear the word “makeover”, what do you think of? From fashion shows to makeup design, women work hard to change their appearance and become more attractive. But here at the Hair Transplant Network, the word “makeover” takes on a whole new meaning. Balding men and women suffering from hair loss desperately long for fabulous locks of hair that properly dress and frame the face. Now, with the recent developments in hair transplant surgery, this dream has become a reality for many.

In the last few years, a select group of surgeons such as those of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians have revolutionized the hair restoration industry because patients have demanded only the best results. Thanks to the patient revolution driven by our online hair loss forum community, many bald men and women can successfully restore a full looking natural head of hair.

Below we introduce to you a few of the great multitude of men and women who have successfully gone from bald to bushy with a hair transplant makeover.

Meet hair replacement patient and hair loss blogger Coopcoopcooperman. We can only surmise that the multiple “coops” in his name signify his exhilaration in drinking from the hair fountain of youth. After receiving 4108 grafts in one hair transplant session with Dr. Victor Hasson, his baldness is now a thing of the past after only 7 months. Mr. Coop states emphatically, “It’s so great to have my hair back”.

It is increasingly troubling when patient members of our online hair transplant community who have had hair restoration surgery still have no idea how it works or what to expect.

In a day where information is found by the click of a button, there is no excuse to make poor and uneducated decisions.

Hair transplantation is a REAL option for balding men and women but should not be taken with a grain of salt.  Patients MUST be aware of the benefits, risks, and limitations before proceeding. Even in the hands of an elite hair transplant surgeon, risks exist.

The purpose of our online community education and providing truthful information. Though those recommended and elite members of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians have been pre-screened, it is up to ALL seeking patients considering hair replacement to research ALL surgeons they are considering.

Do your research, take your time, and take responsibility for your own decisions. With so much information available through the internet, it is hard to accept that people can be deceived as long as a hair loss sufferer researches thoroughly. Yes, there are deceivers and scam artists out there, but there is enough information out there that can help those suffering from hair loss make an educated decision.

In my opinion, one problem is that people want others to do all the work for them. Use our online hair loss forum as an educational tool to help in your research, but don’t use it as an excuse to be lazy and expect that we’ve done ALL the work for you.

Our online community evaluates hair restoration physicians and recommends only the minority of physicians who have a proven track record of performing state of the art hair transplantation. All physicians are carefully evaluated and reviewed by patients who are active on our hair restoration forum.

We recently asked the members of our hair restoration forum community for input regarding the potential recommendation of Dr. William Lindsey. View Dr. Lindsey’s featured potential recommendation forum thread here. As a part of this review process Dr. Lindsey presented numerous examples of his impressive surgical process and hair transplant patient results.

Dr. Lindsey has over 10 years of hair transplant experience and performs hair transplants as the primary part of his practice at his clinic in Reston, VA. He has the experience and staff to perform over 2500 follicular unit grafts using ultra refined follicular unit grafting in a single session when appropriate for the patient. He also only performs hair replacement surgery on one patient per day in order to grant them full attention.

Based on his credentials, technique, and patient results, he has garnered the support of our community and is now our recommended physician for Virginia. To see his online hair transplant physician profile, click here.

We encourage anyone considering hair transplantation in the state of Virginia to consider consulting with Dr. Lindsey

I am searching for a reputable hair transplant clinic in Tennessee.  Dr. Thomas Chu is closest to me, but I don’t know anything about him.  Dr. Fisher in Nashville, Tennessee comes highly recommended, but the distance might a problem.  I would like information on either of these hair restoration physicians and their expertise please.

Thank you for your inquiry.

At the Hair Transplant Network, we only recommend those hair transplant surgeons who perform state of the art hair transplantation and have a proven track record of producing quality results.  See our recommendation standards by clicking here.

If you are particular to undergoing hair transplant surgery in the state of Tennesse, I would encourage you to consider Dr. Jack Fisher who is recommended on the Hair Transplant Network as he performs quality follicular unit hair transplantation.  Pat Hennessey, the Publisher of the Hair Transplant Network, Hair Loss Learning Center, and Hair Loss Q&A Blog visited his hair transplant clinic in the summer of 2005 and was quite impressed by his level of experience and credentials.  Unfortunately, at the time Pat visited with him, Dr. Fisher did not have a hair transplant case and thus could not observe surgery.  See more on Pat’s visit to Dr. Fisher’s clinic by clicking here.

Unfortunately, I do not know anything about Dr. Thomas Chu.  In my opinion however, it is better to go with a hair replacement surgeon who is well known for doing state of the art work.  Be sure however, to spend the necessary time researching these physicians.  I encourage you to use our hair restoration forum as a guide by searching for the surgeon’s last name using the “find” feature.

Who is the best hair transplant doctor?  My hair transplant didn’t work that well because of poor postoperative care.  What should I tell my hair transplant surgeon. and how canI get some kind of refund?  He told me he can redo my hair replacement surgery but I don’t have confidence in him.

I can understand your concerns and I’ll address them one at a time.

Regarding the “best” hair transplant physician, there are a number of surgeons that do quality work however, there are even more who do poor quality work.  Research is the key to selecting a first-rate hair transplant surgeon.  At the Hair Transplant Network, we have done some of the research for you by pre-screening hair restoration physicians.  See a list of our recommended hair restoration physicians.  To see our high level of membership standards, click here.

I recommend that you do your due diligence in research any physician you are considering by looking at before/after hair transplant photos, especially those posted by real patients on our Hair Restoration Discussion Forum.  Meeting hair transplant patients in person is even better in order to make an evaluation of how it looks in person.
