I’ve known Dr. Sharon Keene for over ten years and first saw her perform hair transplant surgery when she was working with Dr. Ron Shapiro in his clinic in Minnesota several years ago.  She has always impressed me as being very meticulous, dedicated and caring.

Just recently I had the pleasure of watching Dr. Keene and her staff perform an ultra refined hair transplantation at her full time office in Tucson, Arizona. It was obvious that she’s only gotten better with time. She continues to be very hands on and places many of the grafts herself. She is a stickler for quality control and feels she can monitor the process from A to Z best by working along side her medical technicians during the entire process.

Though she once did all pure follicular units, she now likes to use a limited amount of double follicular units (two follicular units that are very close together) when appropriate. She believes that this gives the patient the best illusion of density, while still maintaining complete naturalness, even under close inspection. She also feels that the careful use of some multi follicular unit grafts in the midscalp region also gives her patients the best financial value. I tend to agree that it is best not to be bound by pure follicular unit dogma.

In the hands of the right hair restoration physician, today’s hair transplants are so natural that even hairstylists cannot detect them. But despite the recent advancements in the industry, the majority of the public still think of the old hair plugs when hair transplants are mentioned.

Late in 2008, there was a major breakthrough for educating the public on the advanced techniques in hair restoration. On October 7 th, 2008 at 4:00pm EST on ABC, Coalition member Dr. Robert Bernstein, discussed today’s ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Not only is Dr. Bernstein a recognized leader in the hair transplant industry by his peers, he has long received online accolades by his patients on our hair loss forum for producing excellent results.

Upon Dr. Bernstein’s introduction, Oprah asked why Dr. Bernstein didn’t have a hair transplant himself since he is bald. He simply replied that these advanced techniques didn’t exist when he first went bald, and now he is used to it.

In this brief but enlightening segment on the Oprah Winfrey show, Dr. Bernstein presented a brief video demonstrating him and his dedicated staff performing surgery and showcased his patient’s results live on the show. While, Oprah Winfrey had a chance to examine his new head of hair and look for the scar, everyone was very impressed with the result. Additionally, nobody, including Oprah Winfrey was able to find the donor scar.

Recently, we presented the highlights of the annual ISHRS conference and honored a number of leading hair restoration physicians who have contributed a lot to the advancement of hair restoration surgery.

Today, we honor the medical and office staff of these world renowned hair transplant surgeons who significantly contribute to the success of a hair transplant proceduret. Without an experienced and dedicated medical staff, large ultra refined hair transplant megasessions would not be possible.

The first amendment the constitution protects our right to free speech. However, the freedom of expression that we all enjoy on our hair loss forum is not free. Recently, hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Alvi Armani made a decision to sue the Hair Transplant Network for speaking freely on reservations patients have regarding his practices.

Over the years, numerous patient members and the publisher of this web community have expressed their concerns on a number of hair loss forum communities regarding Dr. Armani and his questionable ethics, technique, and deceptive marketing practices. Thus Dr. Armani decided to sue the Hair Transplant Network.

Educated patients publicly evaluating physicians and demanding only the very best results are largely responsible for advancing the hair transplant industry. Dr. Armani and his clinic must have the mistaken notation that intimidation tactics will prevent us from allowing patients their right to free speech and continuing the patient revolution. But they are sadly mistaken. We are willing to go all the way to fight to protect this patient community and their right to speak freely about hair transplant techniques and surgeons.

With your involvement, our hair loss discussion forum has brought a whole new level of transparency and accountability to the hair transplant profession. Today clinics must share impressive patient results on a regular basis if they hope to earn the respect and patronage of the patient members of our forum.

However, over the past few years, only a handful of hair restoration physicians were presenting their work on our forum on a regular basis. This small handful of hair transplant clinics typically got all the online accolades. This created the false impression that only a small handful of surgeons were doing world class hair restoration surgery. This is understandable since those who are “out of sight” are often “out of mind”.

Although each surgeon recommended on the Hair Transplant Network has been privately and publicly evaluated by our community, patients deserve to see their ongoing patient results. To get virtually all recommended clinics to share their work on our forum each month, rather than just a handful, we recently provided all recommended physicians with strong incentives to get active. So far this month, we have had great success in getting virtually all physicians recommended on the Hair Transplant Network to agree to post at least one photo album monthly showing patient results. You may have already noticed a big increase in hair transplant photos posted by a much wider range of leading clinics on the Patient Results Posted by Leading Hair Restoration Clinics forum. There will be many more to come!
