Is there anything (apart from a hair loss concealer) you can use to stop the scalp shining through thinning hair or when you have a totally shaved or bald head?   Plus, does anyone know why the scalp shines so much compared to other parts of the body that are hairless?

This insightful answer was provided  by  Dr. William Lindsey  of Reston, VA who is one of our recommended hair restoration physicians.

First off, some people are oilier than others and are therefore have shinier scalps.   I am one of them.   It looks bad in pictures, and worse when I am the only shiny guy at an event. But that is life and I think (based on dealing with a lot of aging faces) that oily skin ages a bit better than dry skin.

Now you can wear a powder to eliminate that baldness shine. I was recently featured in my bank’s commercial on TV. I recall vividly the camera man hollering for the makeup hottie to come put some powder on me; and I do look a lot better in those commericals than in other videos where I didn’t have powder.

It almost makes me want to go out and get some powder…almost that is. I can only imagine what a couple of my friends would say if they heard I was wearing makeup.

My advice, stay shiny.

Surveys confirm surgical hair restoration has gained popularity amongst balding men and women looking for real hair restoration  solutions over the last several years. In fact, the number of hair transplants performed worldwide has increased 26% since 2006 alone.

State of the art hair transplant surgery has been divided into two distinct procedures, follicular unit transplantation via microscopic dissection (FUT/strip surgery) and follicular unit transplantation via follicular unit extraction (FUE). In both procedures, small ultra refined follicular units (hairs as they occur naturally) are carefully prepared and inserted into tiny recipient sites created by quality physicians using minimally invasive techniques. Where the procedures differ however, is in donor hair removal.

FUE in particular has become exceedingly popular in balding men who desire to keep their hair cropped short on the sides and back of their head. Though both procedures cause some scarring (typically minimal in the hands of a skilled physician under optimal conditions), the main advantage of FUE is that it does not create a linear scar like FUT via strip. However, due to the extra forces placed on the hair follicles during the extraction process, the chance of damage to fragile follicles are greater, thus potentially decreasing overall hair growth yield. Learn more about the Benefits, Limitations, and Potential Problems with FUE.

Recently, a handful of dedicated surgeons with a realistic view of what can be accomplished with follicular unit extraction have engineered new and innovative tools designed to improve the effectiveness and speed of the procedure. To learn how each tool works and helps to overcome the potential problems associated with FUE, click on the respective links below:

This hair loss question was answered by  Dr. Glenn Charles of Florida who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians.   His professional answer is below.

Is 10 months after the first hair transplant  too early for a second one?   Are there any negative things that could occur, if you have your second procedure too early?   Are there any positives in waiting for a year or more to have second procedure?

Dr. CharlesAt 10 months you are probably looking at 80-90% of your hair growth. It really depends on when the hair started growing. If you were getting growth at 3 months, you will be close to a final result at 10 months. If you did not start getting hair regrowth until month 4 or 5 then you may need to wait up to 1 year to get a final result. The concern in transplanting a second procedure too soon is that the doctor may make an incision in the recipient area right on top of a previously placed follicular unit graft that has not yet started growing. It is unlikely that at 10 months that this will occur. One additional benefit of waiting a year or more is that you can make a good decision as to whether you need more grafting in the original transplanted area and if so what areas need more than others.

Dr. CharlesAs Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) becomes increasingly popular amongst male hair loss sufferers, more and more hair transplant surgeons, clinics, and hair restoration companies are designing new tools and machines that allegedly work to make FUEeasier, faster, and more effective. However, with all these new “revolutionary” tools on the market, how does the hair loss sufferer know which tools will deliver the best results?

Recently, forum member “LT” saw the new automated NeoGraft FUE hair transplant machine  advertised on TV as a revolutionary tool that performs faster and more effective FUE. It also claims to eliminate scarring. To discuss the new NeoGraft machine and whether or not it’s the next major advancement in hair transplant surgery, visit this discussion topic.

Most people suffering from hair loss have the same primary goal – to restore all of or as much of their hair as possible. However, the amount of baldness needing coverage varies from patient to patient. Given that the donor hair supply is limited, many hair transplant patients find themselves wanting more than surgical hair replacement can provide. This is why working with a qualified hair restoration physician to establish realistic and achievable goals is paramount.

But what is the best approach to hair restoration? Is the aggressive approach to cover the entire balding scalp with as much coverage and density as possible always the best approach? Or would a more conservative approach that targets a particular area of hair loss while reserving some donor hair for possible future work be more appropriate?

Whether or not full hair restoration is truly necessary for everyone is currently an exciting and active topic on our hair loss forum. We encourage you to join in the discussion by reading others and offering your own opinions.

Cosmetic hair products for grooming and styling can help you improve your image and your life style. They can change your look, reshape your face and thereby make you look younger. If you are experiencing thinning hair, there are some products that can be used to make your hair look fuller and thicker. Styling and grooming products such as shampoos, conditioners, hair spray, gel, mousse and blow dryer can be used to manage the hair into the desired style. They can also add more body and make the hair look shinier, thicker and voluminous. Hair coloring agents make you look younger and are used to minimize the contrast between the hair color and the color of the skin, thus creating the illusion of more hair. Perming and curling can make the hair look thicker by camouflaging some of the thinning areas.

The hair shaft is made of keratinized cells, and subjected to various environmental aggressions and chemical products. Hair shaft is broken into three major layers which include:

  1. The cuticle (outside)
  2. The cortex
  3. The medulla (central layer)
