Can you transplant hair that’s not from your own head and put it in
your balding areas?

If people could donate their hair follicles to another person for a hair transplant I can just imagine the strange scenarios that would come about. But unfortunately (or fortunately) only hair from an identical twin could be successfully transplanted without being rejected. But since hair loss is genetic I can’t imagine the identical twin would want to give up their hair.

I use to tease my younger brother who has ridiculously thick hair that he should donate some for my next hair transplant. But he was never willing. Eventually he found out that this would not work and I was no longer able to tease him about it. What a shame.

I have Alopecia areata, which affects my eyebrows. Would eyebrow restoration/transplant be an option for me?

Eyebrow transplants are becoming more common recently, since the more subtle and refined hair transplant techniques make such delicate work possible. You would need viable donor hair for use in transplanting your eyebrows. To view examples of successful eyebrow hair transplants visit our photo gallery.

I’m 11 days post-op after a hair transplant surgery. Today I noticed a number of transplanted hairs coming off with the scabs. Along the hairline, a largish scab came off with around 10 – 15 transplanted hairs caught in the middle. This has really freaked me out as I’m thinking maybe the hair graft wasn’t properly inserted into the incision, or I pulled out the graft.

At 11 days post op can you shed the transplanted hair or is it becuase of problems? Thanks!

Your concern is actually a very comon concern. Often when the post operative scabs are shed they contain some of the transplanted hairs. This leads many hair transplant patients to worry that their grafts are coming out. But after a week the underlying hair follicles are secure under the skin.

However, it is wise to be gentle with any scabs on your scalp and to only use gentle preasure from the pads of your fingers while shampooing to break up and shed these scabs (i.e. no picking or peeling).

Best wishes for excellent healing and regrowth.

Is it true that dandruff can cause hair loss?

There is speculation by hair restoration physicians that scalp inflamation can aggravate and inhibit healthy hair growth and thus contribute to hair loss and thinning. Some physicians recommend using Nizoral shampoo two or three times a week to minimize any scalp inflamation. Of course, male pattern baldness is primarily determined by genetics. That is why for most balding men we loose hair on top and still keep our hair on the sides regardless of having dandruff, scalp inflamation or what ever shampoo we use. But reducing scalp inflamation may help reduce the severity of our hair loss or thinning.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the HairMax Lasercomb  as a  hair loss treatment.  The makers of the handheld one diode  Hairmax Lasercomb, Lexington International LLC,  claim that their product  increases the number of thick hairs on the scalp based on their 26-week clinical trials.

As the device’s name suggests, it combines a low-level laser with a comb. When drawn through the hair, the laser strikes the scalp to promote hair growth, according to the company.   The  laser comb is  sold on the Web for $545. It is the only drug-free  hair loss treatment  meant for home use in combatting hair loss that’s garnered  FDA approval.

According to a press release from Lexington International, the makers of the Hair Max Laser comb   -

“For the FDA submission, Lexington conducted an extensive clinical study in four different locations around The United States. The study concluded that 93% of the participants (ages 30-60) using the HairMax LaserComb had an increase in the number of terminal (thick) hairs. The average number of terminal hairs per square centimeter increased by 19 hairs/cm ² over a six-month period. During the study, there were not any reports of serious adverse events. The number and types of adverse events were similar in both the active and placebo groups.

Lexington’s clinical study demonstrating the efficacy of the HairMax LaserComb in females is concluding and we will be submitting the data to the FDA shortly.”

I have just noticed thinning of my hair. What treatments are available for female hair loss?

Women can experience hair loss due to changes in their hormones associated with pregnancy or metapause. For woman with hair loss due to hormonal changes/issues the underlying changes and stresses need to be addressed by a physician.

Some woman experience hair loss similar to the classic male pattern baldness that men have. For woman with such hair loss Rogaine for women is perhaps one of the most effective treatments. Propecia is prescribed only for men and should not be used by women. Some women are good candidates for surgical hair restoration. But only if their thinning/balding is in concentrated areas. Women with diffuse thinning throughout the scalp are not good candidates for hair transplantation.

I suggest you do a free hair loss consult with one of the physcians recommeded on the Hair Transplant Network to determine why you are experiencing hair loss and what can be done for you.

Best wishes for restoring and keeping your hair.

Some surgeons listed on your site have ‘Coalition Member’ next to their names, while some do not. Is there any significance to this? Does it indicate any difference in skill level or qualifications? Thanks.

While all hair transplant surgeons recommended on the Hair Transplant Network perform quality follicular unit hair transplantation, only some of them have developed the capability to perform very large sessions of ultra refined and densely packed follicular unit grafts . Those top clinics which have this capacity and an proven track record of outstanding results and ethics are eligible for membership in the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians.

To learn more visit the membership standards page of the Coalition Hair Loss Learning Center.

Membership Criteria

A physician must meet the following requirements before being granted membership in the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians:

  • An excellent reputation of the physician amongst colleagues and former patients.

I had a hair transplant 51 days ago. How many days do I have to wait to see the new hairs?
Any help would be appreciated.

Congratulations on your hair transplant surgery and welcome to the real “hair club”. You’ve got to wait about two more months to start seeing your transplanted hair grow in. The hair will grow in very subtle and thin at first. Then as it grows out if will get thicker and thicker. After one year what you see is what you get.

Best wishes for overcoming your hair loss and growing a bumper crop of new hair.

A regular contributor to our discussion forum (NervousNelly) compiled a list of insightful questions to ask during his hair transplant consultations. I think many of his questions are very useful so I’ve included his list of questions as a reference for others. I suggest all patients make make their own personallized list for their consultations.

Online Hair Transplant ConsultationMany patients often consult with hair restoration physicians who are out of their area over the Internet. To make this process convenient the Hair Transplant Network enables patients to fill out an online consult and attach photos, which can then be emailed to the recommended physicians of your choice.
