I’m very pleased to announce that Dr. Ron Shapiro just won the “Golden Follicle” award at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s annual conference held this past week in Sydney, Australia.

Never has the expression - “It couldn’t have happen to a better person” been truer.

I have had the good fortune of knowing Dr. Shapiro for the past eight years. I know that Ron has made an enormous difference not only in the lives of his own patients, including me, but thousands of other patients whose surgeons learned much from Ron.

Ron is perhaps the most generous person I’ve ever known. He has not only given his patients his very best energy for years, but shared his incredible surgical talent and techniques with his physician colleagues without restriction.

While some may hoard their talents and knowledge to achieve competitive advantage, Ron Shapiro never has. Ron’s clinic door has always been open to his colleagues. He has worked extremely hard over the years to share his best ideas and techniques at meetings and conferences around the world and back. He has also labored extremely hard and long for months, if not years, to co-author an outstanding book on hair restoration surgery –”Hair Transplantation”.

Ron also provided me with great encouragement and support over the years in helping me grow the Hair Transplant Network. He was always offering suggestions for new quality physicians to recommend on our site, despite the fact that adding new physicians diluted his prominence.

Some common hair loss myths taken from AAD.org

1. Dandruff does not contribute to hair loss

Dandruff is caused by a fungus known as malazzesia globosa. This fungus is commonly found floating in the air which is why dandruff can be treated, but not cured. In addition to the scaling which characterizes dandruff, the condition also can lead to hair loss.

Studies have shown that with only 90 minutes of continuous scratching by the fingernails, it is possible to remove all of the cuticular scale, a protective covering on individual hairs, off of a hair shaft. This loss leaves the hair shaft weakened and permanently damaged, making it easily susceptible to breakage and hair loss.

The most effective dandruff shampoos and conditioners contain zinc pyrithione,” advised Dr. Draelos. These ingredients leave behind thin plate-like pieces of medicine on the scalp to prevent regrowth of the fungus, thus acting as a preventive measure for both dandruff and the hair loss associated with scratching.

2. Prescription shampoos treat scalp diseases, but also damage hair.

The two most common scalp diseases are dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, which is characterized by both redness and scaling. People often view products that treat these conditions as harsh and medicinal, explained Dr. Draelos. These misconceptions have led many people to choose to live with the scalp itching rather than treat it with what they fear are harmful chemicals.

South Florida may just be the vanity capitol of the world, beyond even Southern California or Brazil. In South Florida people don’t ask why a person had a cosmetic procedure but why they haven’t.

So it is no surprise that South Florida has more hair restoration physicians per capita than any other place in North America. But only a minority of these hair restoration surgeons are providing truly state of the art results.

Over the past few years I have researched numerous hair restoration clinics in South Florida and out of dozens of clinics narrowed the list down to just a few physicians who I believe are committed to providing the quality hair transplant results.

These physicians are currently Dr. Bernie Nusbaum and Dr. Jeffrey Epstein in Miami and Dr. Glenn Charles and Dr. Alan Bauman in Boca Raton. I have visited each and every one of them in the past and watched them perform quality follicular unit hair transplantation. They are true “gems in the rough”.

Hair restoration surgery continues to evolve and the bar for true excellence has once again moved higher in the past couple of years. Today leading hair transplant surgeons are doing ultra refined follicular unit grafting using tiny instruments to create very small incisions that are carefully angled and directed.
